The United Nations has declared today, June 8, as World Ocean's Day, a day for every being on our planet to globally celebrate the Great Blue. The theme for 2012 is Youth: The Next Wave For Change, inspiring young people to learn about the ocean's inhabitants, how we as humans affect these creatures, and how we all connect together.
Show your spirit for this wondrous day by wearing a blue t-shirt, visiting the World Oceans Day website to find an event near you to bring your children or favorite kiddo (they'll enjoy lots of activities including crafts, story time, and aquarium visits), or by sharing this video on your blog or other social medias:
Also, Zulily is offering lots of cool Dr. Seuss activity pages that can be downloaded and colored then pinned, posted, tweeted, or emailed all in one place. Dr. Seuss' World Ocean Day theme this year is "Ocean's of Inspiration,"giving children lots of ways to get their creative gears going. These pages are only available until June 11, so head on over there today!
And now until June 11, you can visit the Zulily Dr. Seuss Boutique that is offering lots of "One Fish Two Fish" and "The Lorax" items on sale. There are also other Dr. Seuss character products available for purchase.
In celebration of World Ocean's Day, since my family doesn't live anywhere near the water, the kids and I are having a movie day, viewing great flicks that feature the ocean (and only makes us wish we lived closer to one). Here are some of my favorites:
- Blue Crush (Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez)
- Soul Surfer (AnnaSophia Robb, Dennis Quaid)
- Free Willy (Jason James Richter, Lori Petty)
- The Cove (documentary)
- Castaway (Tom Hanks)
- Finding Nemo (Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres)
- Happy Feet (Elijah Wood, Robin Williams)
- Surf's Up (Shia LaBeouf)
What are you and your family doing today to get acquainted with the ocean? What are you doing to spread the word of the importance of this phenomenal body of water?
